Win Every Book We’ve Ever Published! 📚
+ A cover reveal for Amy Irvine’s ALMOST ANIMAL
Happy 5th Birthday, S&G! 🎂
Established 2006. Independent since 2021.
For the past 5 years, we have been proud to publish great books that touch readers like you. We understand the power of stories to enhance meaning, deepen understanding, engage emotions, effect change, and enlarge our sense of humanity by connecting us to people and places we may never experience in our lifetimes. To celebrate our anniversary, we will be giving away every book we’ve ever published and a limited-edition tote bag to one lucky winner.
This week, we spoke to Valley Bookseller’s event coordinator and the founder of Literature Lovers’ Night Out, Pamela Klinger-Horn, about why independent publishing is so vital today.
What makes independent publishing special?
Independent publishers are poised to take an interest in the unique, unknown, and special titles that come their way. They don’t rely only on potential best sellers to fill their list (although many titles become best sellers). With smaller lists of titles, independent publishers can put more energy behind each book and give it the attention it needs to get to booksellers and readers.
Why are relationships between publishers and independent booksellers so important?
When independent publishers take time to connect with booksellers through email, conferences, and webinars, it brings a focus to books that may otherwise be overlooked. When I had the honor of visiting the Spiegel & Grau office, I felt like a visiting dignitary. The entire team assembled to greet me and spent time talking about their current and upcoming books and ways to support bookstores. After that, of course, I am a huge Spiegel & Grau fan.
What’s your favorite S&G book to recommend?
There are many - but if I have to choose one, it will be Go as a River by Shelley Read. We were fortunate to host Shelley on her first book tour and present Go as a River to our customers. This has become a favorite hand sell and a novel I treasure. As a completely women-owned and operated bookstore, Valley Bookseller loves a book about strong women.
